Character Contest Winner: Piotr “Colossus” Rasputin

May 16, 2014 under Contest

AstonColossusThe overall winner for our first contest is David McBrayer who submitted an entire team of X-Pathfinders and linked their stories together.  While he could only win in one category, he could have taken multiple easily.  His other submissions will appear in future blog posts. If you want your chance at glory and prizes, we have a contest open right now asking for builds for Booker Dewitt from Bioshock: Infinite and Angel from the X-Men. If you want a level 1 pdf of this build, you can find it here: Colossus

Background

Piotr was born into a farming family in Brevoy.  His strength served him well on the farm, where he humbly and loyally dedicated himself to his duties.  One day, when two panicked oxen drove a plow straight toward his younger sister, Piotr shielded her body with his, bearing the brunt of the impact.  His brave deed distinguished him in the eyes of his family and community, and he was nicknamed Colossus.

A stranger from the south arrived on the farm one day, requesting his aid in rescuing a team of adventurers.  Although he loved his family and would have chosen to remain on the farm, his family told him that he could do even more good as a Pathfinder.  It was with mixed feelings in his heart that he accompanied Venture Captain Charles Xavier to Absalom, but his doubts soon waned as he became the hero his family knew he would become.

Character Contest 2: Booker DeWitt

May 8, 2014 under Announcements, Contest
"One thing I've learned: if you don't draw first, you don't get to draw at all." ―Booker DeWitt, to Elizabeth

“One thing I’ve learned: if you don’t draw first, you don’t get to draw at all.”
―Booker DeWitt, to Elizabeth

It’s time for another character build contest.  This time, we are visiting video games with the character Booker DeWitt from the much acclaimed Bioshock: Infinite. This will be an interesting contest because each person’s version of Booker can be vastly different. Booker definitely has his own personality and skillset, but he also represents the player and his skills could be honed in melee, various firearms or a variety of vigors which produce magic like effects ranging from elemental damage and telekinesis to mind control.

As a bonus, I’m also re-opening submissions for the X-man Angel from the previous contest.

Official Rules

  1. You can only enter once. Make it good.
  2. Submissions should include the following: A stat block or character sheet for the character at first level, a list of character choices per level up to 11th level, a summary of abilities and powers at 11th level and a background write up for the character similar to what you might see for a character in an adventure or a pregenerated character.
  3. Character builds should use Pathfinder Society rules, but feel free to include notes at the end to expand the options for non-society play.
  4. Submissions need to be received before Monday, May 19, 2014.
  5. Send submissions by email to pathfinder@wvgeo.com or hand them in on paper to one of our regional Venture-Officers.
  6. Participants should be willing to pick up the prize at one of our scheduled events.

Entries will be judged by non-participants with on the following criteria.

  • Faithful: Is this character a good representation of the original
  • Rules: Clever use of Pathfinder rules in the build and lack of mistakes
  • Setting: Has this character’s background been adjusted to fit Golarion’s setting in a seamless and interesting manner

Prizes!   I’ve got a miniature of Booker DeWitt for the winner. It is on a 1″ base so it can be used with Pathfinder.  The winning entry will be featured in an article on this blog so the world can see your work.

Character Contest Winner: Cyclops

May 7, 2014 under Announcements, Contest

Cyclops-x-menThe first winner for our recent character build contest is Jerad Bailey for his build of the X-Man known as Cyclops.  In this contest the challenge was to take the character from comics and movies and translate them into a legal Pathfinder Society Character.  Jerad’s build is interesting because while it has the iconic energy blasts, he concentrates on the character’s combat abilities and battlefield leadership. In these builds we will present how the character is built at level 1, all the important choices that are made as they level up, a synopsis of how they will function at level 11 and a brief background fitting the concept into the world of Golarion.  Click here for the level 1 build: Cyclops Level 1. If you have any thoughts about the build or would have done it differently, please leave your comments below. We are very interested in how others would do it.

Scott “Cyclops” Summers
LN Human
16/14/12/11/14/12

Scott, his parents, and his younger brother lived an oppressed life in Irrisen, one that his father sought to rectify. A daring escape left Scott gravely injured and his parents pinned down at the border of Irrisen, fending off one of the winter witches’ doll sentries. Fortune smiled as Scott’s brother found a group of immigrants and pilgrims making their way south, stabilizing Scott and getting them as far as Magnimar. By the time Scott had finally fully recovered, he was under the care of an orphanage and his brother had long since been adopted. The road to recovery was long, though Scott was tenacious. Scott’s special talents manifested slowly; the orphanage manager recognized Scott’s gifts and petitioned the Heidmarchs to allow him gainful employment at their manor. With the help of the Pathfinder Society, Scott has been able to come to terms with his past (going as far as to adopt the surname “Summers” to distance himself further from Irrisen) and his growing powers.

Level 1: Sorcerer (Elemental [Fire] Bloodline) 1

  • Elemental [Fire] Ray, Cantrips, Eschew Materials
  • Toughness (Human Feat)
  • Skill Focus, Perception (Level Feat)
  • Defensive Strategist Trait, Carefully Hidden Trait

Level 2: Monk (Martial Artist) 1

  • Deflect Arrows (Bonus Monk Feat), Flurry of Blows x2, Stunning Fist, Unarmed Strike 1d6

Level 3: Cavalier (Standard Bearer / Strategist) 1

  • Challenge 1/day, Banner, Order of the Dragon, Tactician (Modified)
  • Precise Strike (Tactician Bonus Feat)
  • Weapon Focus, Unarmed Strike (Level Feat)

Level 4: Monk (Martial Artist) 2

  • Improved Grapple (Bonus Monk Feat), Evasion, AC +1
  • Intelligence Increase

Level 5: Cavalier (Standard Bearer / Strategist) 2

  • Order Ability (Aid Allies)
  • Scorpion Style (Level Feat)

Level 6: Monk (Martial Artist) 3

  • Fast Movement +10ft, Maneuver Training, Pain Points

Level 7: Monk (Martial Artist) 4

  • Exploit Weakness, Martial Arts Master, Unarmed Strike 1d8
  • Weapon Specialization: Unarmed Strike (Level Feat)

Level 8: Cavalier (Standard Bearer / Strategist) 3

  • Cavalier’s Charge
  • Strength Increase

Level 9: Monk (Martial Artist) 5

  • High Jump, Extreme Endurance
  • Body Shield (Level Feat)

Level 10: Cavalier (Standard Bearer / Strategist) 4

  • Challenge 2/day, Drill Instructor

Level 11: Monk (Martial Artist) 6

  • Bonus Feat, Flurry of Blows x3, Fast Movement +20ft
  • Greater Grapple (Level Feat)

At level 11 he will be able to function as follows:

  • Cyclops will have the ability to fire his optic blast several times a day (the Sorcerer origin/dip), but that shouldn’t be the defining quality for the character
  • The four levels of Standard Bearer / Strategist Cavalier give Cyclops some important features prudent to the character: sacrificing a mount in exchange for the banner feature sooner (allies are given morale bonuses to saving throws versus fear, and to charge attacks), as well as an enhanced tactician ability to give the party more options prior to and during battle. Full BAB doesn’t hurt, either
  • Six levels of Martial Artist Monk gives Cyclops an upgraded version of Flurry of Blows and the ability to go toe-to-toe with just about any foe
  • Feat selection includes Toughness (offset caster level and dipping), Skill Focus [Perception], Deflect Arrows (to avoid ranged attacks), Improved and Greater Grapple (melee control), Precise Strike (for squad fighting), Weapon Focus and Specialization [Unarmed Strike] (weapon of choice), Scorpion Style (disabling melee combatants), and Body Shield (using enemy momentum to damage other enemies)

Two Week Warning – X-Men Character Contest

March 19, 2014 under Announcements, Contest

This is a reminder that the deadline for entries in our X-Men character contest is in two weeks. Send your builds for a Pathfinder version of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Angel, Beast, Colossus and Storm to pathfinder@wvgeo.com before the deadline to enter.  You can enter once for each character for up to six chances to win a miniature the winning character.  Full rules can be found here.

There have already been a few entries, and I’ve heard many very fun ideas for these characters.   It’s not any harder than planning out a new PFS character.  Show us playable stats, either as a stat block, or character sheet. Show how you level the character to 11th level, and what feats and powers you pick at each level. Show us what the character is like at 11th level, either as a stat block or a brief description of how the character plays once it has all of the necessary powers and abilities to be the x-character you picked. Finally, give a short background for your character, making their story fit the Golarion campaign setting. The back story doesn’t have to be long, just a few sentences like what would appear on a pregenerated character. We will not be disqualifying people just because something is not up to a certain standard as long as we can tell what’s going on.

Sample Contest Entry

My hat is smarter than you, Tiger-Man.

My hat is smarter than you, Tiger-Man.

I recently announced a character building contest, and I know many of you are already working on it.  Since this is our first one, I’m going to offer you an example of the sort of information the judges will be looking for.  You don’t have to match this format exactly, but you can get the idea.  Don’t be copying lines and lines of text from the rulebooks.

So I present to you, Edward Nigma, also known as The Riddler. Re-imagined for Golarion.

“You don’t understand… I really didn’t want to leave you any clues. I really planned never to go back to the Absalom Asylum. But I left you a clue anyway. So I… I have to go back there. Because I might need help. I… I might actually be crazy.”

Background

Edward Nigma was born to one of Absalom’s noble families. His great intelligence was evident at an early age, so his father spent a great deal of time and effort on Edward’s education. A serious man, his father allowed no dishonesty, foolishness or creativity, and would punish his son severely for the slightest of infractions.

Eventually, Edward had a nervous breakdown, and even though he was incapable of lying he created fantastic puzzles and riddles to misdirect. He fed this compulsion and it eventually brought him to a life of crime, looking for greater opponents to test his wit against. A powerful inquisitor known only by the tiger mask he wore eventually overcame Nigma and brought him to justice.

Nigma was taken to Absalom Asylum for rehabilitation. There he met a Pathfinder who was resting in the Blakros Memorial wing who explained to him the adventure and challenge that could be experienced as a field agent.  Nigma turned a page in his story and committed himself and his impressive mind in service to the lore.

Character Build Contest #1: X-Men

February 28, 2014 under Announcements, Contest

It’s contest time! This contest grew from a discussion in the Facebook group about Pathfinder Character builds that matched characters in other media, specifically the x-men. The goal will be to create a pathfinder character that matches the important powers and theme of the superhero.  There are a lot of us who love building interesting characters, so here is your chance to shine and win a prize to boot. Our first batch of characters are the classic X-men. These misunderstood souls are born with abilities that make the people they try to protect fear them. Cyclops, Jean Grey, Angel, Beast, Colossus and Storm!

So... many...

Official Rules

  1. You can make submissions for as many of the characters as you like, but only one per character.
  2. The characters you mar choose from are: Cyclops, Jean Grey, Angel (not Archangel), Beast, Colossus and Storm.
  3. Submissions should include the following: A Paizo style stat block for the character at first level, a list of character choices per level up to 11th level, a stat block for the character at 11th level a summary of abilities and powers at 11th level and a background write up for the character similar to what you might see for an important character in an adventure or a pregenerated character.
  4. Character builds should use Pathfinder Society rules, but feel free to include notes at the end to expand the options for non-society play.
  5. The contest will run till the end of March, 2014.
  6. Send submissions by email to pathfinder@wvgeo.com
  7. Participants should have attended an event or game hosted by the Pathfinder Society of West Virginia and be willing to pick up the prize at one of our scheduled events.

Entries will be judged by a team on non-participants with a score from 1-5 on the following criteria.

  • Faithful: Is this character a good representation of the original
  • Rules: Clever use of Pathfinder rules in the build and lack of mistakes
  • Setting: Has this character’s background been adjusted to fit Golarion’s setting in a seamless and interesting manner

Prizes!   I’ve ordered a Heroclix miniature for each of the characters. They will be rebased on custom 1″ bases so they can be used with Pathfinder.  The winner for each character will be featured in an article on this blog so the world can see your work.  If this goes well, it will be the first of many contests. So get to it! Mojo demands you to entertain the crowds, or else!
